LinkedIn follow-up message templates

Two or three light follow-ups on LinkedIn, each giving the person a new and easy reason to reply.

When to use these

  • Your first LinkedIn message got no reply after about a week.
  • The prospect is still active on LinkedIn: posting, commenting, changing roles.
  • You want to stay friendly and visible without chasing.

The content bump

LinkedIn message

Hi {{firstName}}, just saw your post on {{topic}}. {{oneLineReaction}}. Made me think of my earlier question: is {{problem}} something you are working on this quarter?

Why it works: Reacting to something they just posted is a natural reason to return, and it brings the earlier question back up.

The short nudge

LinkedIn message

Hi {{firstName}}, I know LinkedIn inboxes get busy. Would a two-line summary of how {{peerCompany}} handled {{problem}} be useful? Happy to send it.

Why it works: Acknowledging they are busy and offering something tiny makes it easy to reply with a single word.

The polite close

LinkedIn message

Hi {{firstName}}, I will leave it here so I do not crowd your inbox. If {{problem}} comes up later, I am around. Good luck with {{currentInitiative}}!

Why it works: Ending gracefully keeps the relationship intact, and people often reply to this message more than to the ones before.

Tips before you send

  • Space LinkedIn follow-ups about a week apart.
  • Stop after two follow-ups on LinkedIn.
  • Engage with their posts between messages; it keeps you visible without another message.
  • If they reply on email instead, stop the LinkedIn steps.

Questions

  • How do you follow up on LinkedIn without being annoying?

Wait about a week, keep it to two lines, add something new (a reaction to their post, a small resource) and stop after two follow-ups.

  • Is it OK to follow up on LinkedIn and email at the same time?

Yes, if the messages are coordinated: different days, the same topic, and both stop as soon as they reply on either channel.
