LinkedIn connection request message templates

Short connection notes that give a real reason to connect and do not pitch. Each one fits in 200 characters.

When to use these

  • You want to connect with a prospect before you message them.
  • You have something in common: a group, an event, a mutual connection, a post.
  • You plan to start a conversation after they accept, not in the invite.

Shared context

LinkedIn connection note

Hi {{firstName}}, we are both in {{groupOrEvent}} and I liked your point about {{topic}}. Would be good to connect.

Why it works: Shared context is the most common reason people accept, and there is nothing to sell yet.

Content compliment

LinkedIn connection note

Hi {{firstName}}, your post on {{topic}} was spot on, especially {{specificPoint}}. I write about {{yourTopic}} too. Happy to connect.

Why it works: Naming one specific point shows you actually read it, which a generic "great post" does not.

Peer note

LinkedIn connection note

Hi {{firstName}}, I work with {{role}}s at {{industry}} companies like {{company}} and like to stay connected with people in the space. Would be glad to connect.

Why it works: It is honest about who you are without a pitch, which reads as a peer rather than a salesperson.

Tips before you send

  • Keep the note under 200 characters. Free LinkedIn accounts get less room than Premium ones.
  • Do not pitch in the invite. Sell after they accept, if at all.
  • Sending without a note is fine when you have nothing specific to say.
  • LinkedIn limits how many invitations you can send each week. Withdraw old pending invites now and then.
  • Look at their profile before you write. One real detail beats any template.

Questions

  • Should I add a note to a LinkedIn connection request?

Add one when you have a real, specific reason to connect. A generic note is worse than none. Free accounts can only send a limited number of personalised notes, so save them for the people who matter most.

  • How long can a LinkedIn connection note be?

Up to 300 characters on Premium and 200 on free accounts. Shorter is better anyway: one or two sentences.

  • How many LinkedIn connection requests can I send per week?

LinkedIn sets a weekly limit that depends on your account, commonly reported at around 100. Sending well under it and keeping your acceptance rate high protects your account.
