LinkedIn message templates after connecting

The first message after someone accepts sets the tone. Open with a question or something useful, not a calendar link.

When to use these

  • A prospect accepted your connection request in the last few days.
  • You want to start a real conversation before mentioning what you sell.
  • You have one useful thing to share or ask.

The question

LinkedIn message

Thanks for connecting, {{firstName}}. Curious: how is {{company}} handling {{problem}} these days? Most {{role}}s I talk to are {{commonApproach}}, and I am trying to see what is actually working.

Why it works: A genuine question about their work invites a reply and tells you whether there is a fit before you pitch anything.

The useful share

LinkedIn message

Thanks for connecting, {{firstName}}. Saw you are working on {{initiative}}. We put together {{resource}} on exactly that; happy to send it if useful. No strings.

Why it works: Offering something relevant builds goodwill, and asking before sending a link keeps it from feeling like spam.

The soft pitch

LinkedIn message

Thanks for connecting, {{firstName}}. Straight to the point, since your time is short: we help {{role}}s at companies like {{company}} {{outcome}}. {{peerCompany}} saw {{result}}. Is that something you are looking at, or not a priority right now?

Why it works: Some people prefer directness. A clear one-line offer with proof and an easy "not a priority" exit respects that.

Tips before you send

  • Wait a day or two after they accept before sending your first message.
  • Keep it to three or four lines; LinkedIn messages are read on phones.
  • Do not paste your email template into LinkedIn. It is a more casual channel.
  • If they also get your emails, refer to the same topic so it feels like one conversation.

Questions

  • What should my first LinkedIn message say after connecting?

Thank them briefly, then ask one genuine question about their work or offer one useful thing. Save the pitch until they reply.

  • How soon should I message after a connection is accepted?

A day or two later. Messaging seconds after they accept feels automated; waiting weeks loses the moment.

  • Should I combine LinkedIn messages with email?

Yes. Prospects who see you on both channels are more likely to reply, as long as the messages are coordinated and you stop both when they respond.
